A driver has escaped injury after his truck caught fire on the Hume Highway.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) received a call at 11:20 am about a prime mover whose rear brakes had caught alight on the motorway near Yerrinbool, north of Bowral.

The entire southbound lane was shut for almost one hour between 11:30 am and 12:20 pm as emergency service crews extinguished the blaze.

NSW RFS responded with six trucks and a bulk water unit, while Fire and Rescue NSW supplied five trucks.

Police, Transport Management Control and NSW Ambulance also attended.

An RFS spokesperson said while the prime mover itself was not impacted, the trailer and its load of vehicles were completely destroyed by fire.

Motorists have been told to use caution in the area with one southbound lane still closed at 4 pm.

Detours could be made along the Old Hume Highway, however heavy vehicles cannot use this road.
