P-plater dies in two-car crash south of Moruya

A car crash has claimed the life of a 17-year-old P-plater and closed one lane of the busy Princes Highway this afternoon (14 January).

A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the scene 10 km south of Moruya just after midday following reports of a two-vehicle crash.

“Police have been told a silver hatchback was travelling west on Bingie Road at Bergalia before turning onto the Princes Highway where it collided with a white van,” a spokesperson said.

“The female P-plate driver of the hatchback died at the scene. She is yet to be formally identified.

“The 62-year-old male driver of the van sustained minor injuries and was taken to Moruya Hospital for mandatory testing.”

It’s the second fatality on southeast regional roads in the past 24 hours. A man died following a multi-vehicle crash on the Kings Highway yesterday.

Stop/slow traffic control is in place on one southbound lane and motorists have been advised to avoid the area. Those who can’t are being asked to allow extra travel time and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews on site.

Among the outpouring of grief on social media, there was an undercurrent of anger about the safety of the Princes Highway intersection.

“How many more accidents need to happen at the Bingie turn off before they sort out the road situation there?” one person wrote.

“The design of the intersection should be modified to that similar to the northern access to Dalmeny,” another added.

“Bingie/Congo drivers heading north are subjected to harsh acceleration to get up to highway speed in a diminishing merger lane whereby the line marking forces them to give way to the inside vehicle and at the same time cannot cross the double line into oncoming southbound traffic.

“The Dalmeny solution fixes this problem.

“In addition, the sight distance to the south for northbound Bingie drivers is poor, for a 100 km zone.”

An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and a report will be prepared for the information of the coroner. Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police immediately.

The Bingie Road intersection with the Highway is not dangerous if approached with patience and normal caution. Even in a slow accelerating loaded truck the intersection works well enough and there is ample length to accelerate in the merge lane. Turning South from the Bergalia Link intersection, just North of Bingie Road is somewhat more difficult.

Problems occur when drivers are impatient, distracted or fail to check North bound and dual South bound lanes.
Drivers failing to indicate their intentions early, or distracted by phones, passengers or being inattentive or rushing to take unnecessary risks are what makes turning onto the highway precarious.

I have live in the area for 40 year and there has never be a crash fatal at this intersection. Yes there been 3 death at The Tuross turn off after they re design the t intersection. In this re design the emerging lane onto the Princess Highway was taken away leading to fatally. Bingi has had a emerging lane for decades with no fatal until yesterday. Recently this t intersect has had a higher traffic flow due the protesting of tree clearing to make the alternative road to Moruya safer. Due to the protest of tree remove to make a private road safer which run through a mining lease the own close down the road on the direction of the department of Occupational, Heath and Safety. This closure led to more traffic flow at Bingi T intersection. I feel if this road remain open to the public this fatally would not have happened. I place the blame indirectly on this Protest group. The design of the T intersection has no bearing on the cause of the fatally. I have seen the site of the fatally and viewed braking mark in the turning lane to turn right. I assume the driver of the van assume this was a overtaking lane but there is legal traffic sign to indicate that it is a turning lane not a overtaking lane. As the driver of the small sedan entry the emerging lane on the princess highway the driver of the van attempting to overtake in the turning lane collided with the car in the emerging lane. The driver of the van was definitely in the wrong. Like I first state there has never been a fatally at this T intersection since the emerging was put in place. No doubt this emerging has made did make it safer to emerge onto the Highway. The remarks that indication that Bingo T intersect as dangerous is incorrect. Like I stated with out the emerging lane this T intersection would just as dangerous as The Turross T intersection since the removal of the emerging lane in 2018. I can not understand why they removed this emerging lane. Because when I drive through this T intersection traffic on the Turross road has always has bank up traffic try the enter onto the Princess Highway heading north. Like there has been 3 fatal at the Turross intersection since the removal of the emerging lane. But Bingi T intersect is safer because it has a emerging head north on the Princess highway. The protest add more traffic flow but this is not the reason for the fatally it was purely driver error of the van overtaking in the emerging lane.

The intersection in fact any intersection is not the problem here and never has been it’s the poor decisions made when they get behind the wheel of something that’s just as dangerous as a hand gun but so many just sadly fail to respect it and it’s consequences….

I used to live there. So many close calls and witnessed close calls. We chose to stop at the give way sign to be sure no vehicle unseen in hollow to the north. Then get honked and abused by people behind wanting to roll through. Agree it needs to be like Dalmeny merging lanes, AND make it a stop intersection entering off Bingi Road
