UPDATED 4 pm: A woman has suffered serious leg injuries in the five-vehicle crash that closed the Barton Highway north of Hall this morning (13 April).

Police have been told a truck was travelling south on the Barton Highway when it struck the rear of a stationary vehicle waiting at roadworks.

The impact pushed the vehicle into three more vehicles.

The female driver of an SUV was trapped, before she was taken to Canberra Hospital with serious leg injuries.

She is in a stable condition.

Three children who were in the SUV were not injured.

The male driver of the truck was also not injured.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and anyone with further information or dashcam footage of the incident are being urged to contact Yass Police on 6226 9399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Barton Highway is still closed in both directions.

UPDATED 12:40pm: The Barton Highway will be closed for several hours, as emergency services remain on scene at a serious collision involving five vehicles.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said traffic is being diverted along surrounding dirt roads, which are not designed for heavy vehicles.

“These trucks need to find alternative routes, preferably avoiding Canberra,” she said.

“We’re also asking trucking companies, if your vehicles have not left yet, don’t depart.”

It’s unclear how many people have been involved in the crash at this stage, however police confirmed some have suffered serious injuries.

11:30am: The Barton Highway is closed in both directions about three kilometres north of Hall after a serious crash involving five vehicles, including a truck.

Emergency services are on scene trying to free those who are trapped, with a vehicle wedged underneath the cab of the truck.

Fuel has also spilled across the road.

The crash occurred just before 10:30 am this morning (13 April), close to roadworks near Spring Ridge Road, Wallaroo, in NSW.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and find another route.

Those travelling southbound can turn off the Barton Highway onto Murrumbateman Road, then take Sutton Road to the Federal Highway, and re-join the Barton Highway in Downer, ACT.

Those heading north can take the Federal Highway to Sutton, then take Sutton Road and Murrumbateman Road to re-join the Barton Highway.

Heavy vehicles will have to wait or use the Hume or Federal Highways due to weight restrictions on Canberra’s roads.

More to come.

The road work should take some responsibility. They put different speed limits from 60 to 100km/hr and sometimes they require cars to stop on 100km/hr road. They will kill more people if they keep doing so. I think the authority needs to improve the safety on this Barton Hwy, for example: put speed limit to 80km/hr and increase to 100 when there is no road work.

I drive on this road at least four days a week and I think what they are doing is absurd. They require people driving 60 but just standing there to have a coffee and doing nothing.
