A man has been charged for allegedly travelling over 190 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, under the influence of alcohol and with an unrestrained child in the car.
Officers arrested the 34-year-old after he blew 0.137 in a roadside breath test – almost triple the legal limit – and for having an unrestrained seven-year-old sitting in the back.
He was stopped on North Head Drive near Moruya Bridge by officers who noticed the allegedly speeding car with no headlights on George Bass Drive.
The man was charged with mid-range drink driving, speeding over 45 km/h, reckless driving or speeding in a dangerous manner, driving in the dark without lights, resisting an officer and having an unrestrained passenger under the age of 16.
He was refused bail at Wollongong Local Court on Easter Sunday and will appear before the same court today (Tuesday, 14 April).
A child-at-risk notification has been made, NSW Police said.
Double demerits ran across NSW and the ACT for the duration of the Easter long weekend and Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, said the driver’s actions were reprehensible.
“To put a child in harm’s way is particularly appalling. There are no excuses for this behaviour,” he said.
“We make no apologies for taking the appropriate actions against those selfish enough to get behind the wheel while under the influence and jeopardising the safety of the community.”
