The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning to the ACT and surrounding areas after detecting slow-moving thunderstorms.

Severe storms were detected at 1:55 pm on the weather radar near Tuggeranong and Pine Island, heading north.

It’s due to the humid and unstable conditions in the region.

They’re forecast to hit Weston Creek, Woden Valley and Hume by 2:25 pm and Canberra Civic and South Canberra by 2:55 pm.

Heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding, is likely.

The State Emergency Service has advised people should:

  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
  • Don’t walk, ride your bike or drive through floodwater
  • If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue
  • Unplug computers and appliances
  • Avoid using the phone during the storm
  • Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors.

A more general severe weather warning has been issued for the rest of the ACT, as well as parts of the South Coast, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.

Locations that could be impacted include Bombala, Braidwood, Tidbinbilla, Bredbo, Nimmitabel and Queanbeyan.

Oranmeir recorded 35 mm of rainfall in the 30 minutes to 12:39 pm.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
