A man is being held in custody until at least March after facing Goulburn court charged over the alleged sexual abuse of a young girl in the state’s Southern Tablelands earlier this week.

On Wednesday 19 January 2022, police received reports that a 15-year-old girl had been sexually assaulted earlier that day by a man known to her.

The matter was referred to the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad, who commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries and with the help of Hume Police District officers, a 69-year-old man was arrested by investigators about 11:35 pm the same day at a house in Goulburn.

The man was taken to Goulburn Police Station, where he was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault – victim under the age of 16 years, and aggravated sexual assault – deprive liberty (DV).

Police will allege in court the girl was in the care of the man when the assault took place.
