With drivers now able to provide licences on their phone as a valid form of ID in NSW, both ACT Policing and Access Canberra have confirmed that digital licences from NSW will be accepted in the ACT, despite not being available to local residents.
“The rollout of the digital driver’s licence in New South Wales will not adversely affect how ACT Policing deals with motorists from NSW,” an ACT Policing spokesperson told Region Media.
“Prior to the official rollout in August, ACT Policing Traffic Operations disseminated an information bulletin to all ACT Policing members for their awareness regarding the Digital Drivers Licence. If there is any doubt regarding a driver licence status, ACT Policing members have access to RTA databases to validate interstate Australian driver licences.”
Access Canberra Customer Service Manager Penny Eliopoulos also says that there is nothing stopping Canberra bars and clubs accepting digital licences as a valid form of ID.
“They are able to accept them, but it’s up to their discretion as well, but there is nothing stopping them,” she said. “Depending on the club, the way the times are going they should [accept it].”
NSW drivers are still being encouraged to carry their physical licence when travelling out of state (including in the ACT), or at the very least, make sure their phone screens are not cracked and the battery is sufficiently charged so they can be accurately identified by police if required.
The ACT Government has indicated it will roll out digital licences in the 2020-2021 financial year.
