A woman has been airlifted to hospital after being attacked by two lions at the Shoalhaven Zoo on the South Coast today.

Emergency services were called to the zoo just before 10.30 am this morning (29 May) following reports a zookeeper had been attacked by lions.

A 35-year-old woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for head and neck injuries before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police have been told the woman was cleaning the enclosure at the time.

Officers from South Coast Police District established a crime scene and began inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SafeWork NSW has been notified.
