Two men died yesterday when their B-double truck collided with a freight train on a rural rail crossing at Eurabba Lane near Bribbaree at around 5:15 pm.

Police said the two men died instantly. They are yet to be formally identified.

As a result of the impact, the truck and surrounding grass area caught fire but was extinguished by the Rural Fire Service.

Officers from the Hume Police District attended the accident and established a crime scene.

The train line between Stockinbingal and Quandialla was closed all night and was expected to reopen at 7:00 am today.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

This is the second accident of this type near Bribbaree in the past year, the last occurred on 20 February 2020.

I believe that there should be gates to open each side of the railway line. This would allow the drivers to stop and think first before making a run for it to cross before the train
