UPDATE 4:15 pm – Essential Energy expects to have power restored across the South Coast area by this evening.

A spokesperson said more than 25,000 customers had already had their power restored, with efforts now focused on the Bega region.

“Prevailing winds are a challenge for crews, who continue to work on restoring power in the Bega area,” they said.

“Essential Energy estimates to have supply restored to the majority of affected customers by 5.30pm.”

No reason for the outages has been given at this time.

4 pm – At least 30,000 homes and businesses are without power across the South Coast area, with no set timeframe of when the lights will come back on.

The unplanned power outage has impacted the Moruya, Batemans Bay, Mossy Point, Bodalla, Tuross, Cobargo and Narooma areas.

Essential Energy crews are currently investigating the cause, however the exact issue at this point in time – and whether all outages in the region are connected – is unknown.

“While we haven’t identified the issue so far, we do expect the extreme winds in the area have possibly caused some damage to the network,” a spokesperson said.

“Crews are on the ground patrolling the electricity network, working in and around tough conditions caused by extreme winds.

“Unfortunately at this point in time, we can’t say when the power will be back on.”

We’ve been reminded if we come across a fallen or damaged powerline or poles to keep at least eight metres away and report the issue to Essential Energy on 13 20 80.

Further updates are being provided online and via the organisation’s Facebook page.

More to come.
