The Mayor of Yass Valley Council, Rowena Abbey, is urging local residents to do the right thing when it comes to travelling outside the region during the upcoming October long weekend.
While she welcomed the lifting of the Yass stay-at-home order earlier this week, she said there was a danger of people travelling to areas which were still under COVID-19 restrictions.
“You may have heard that the stay-at-home order was lifted in the Yass Valley on Tuesday 28 September, which is great news for our community and businesses,” she said.
“However, I want to remind everyone that if you live in the Yass Valley and travel to an area of concern where stay-at-home orders remain in place – including the Goulburn-Mulwaree, Hilltops, Queanbeyan-Palerang Local Government Areas and the ACT, you are subject to stay-at-home restrictions for 14 days on return.”
She said it was also important for people who lived in such areas of concern not to visit Yass unless it was for essential purposes.
“While it may be tempting to visit friends and family over the October long weekend, it’s important everyone does the right thing to stop the spread of COVID-19 to the Yass Valley and ensure businesses already struggling don’t have to close their doors again.”
Mayor Abbey said police would be enforcing all stay-at-home orders and would make sure people visiting over the long weekend were not breaching those orders.
“We were placed back in lockdown just two days after the stay-at-home order was lifted earlier this month because of new cases of COVID-19,” she said. “We do not want this to happen again, so please be responsible by only travelling where permitted, hand-sanitising, wearing a mask, checking into venues and social distancing.
“Let’s ensure we stay safe and enjoy our freedoms.”
