Rugby Union juniors from as far as the Southern Highlands, Riverina, Illawarra and A.C.T will hit the paddock in Tathra this weekend, at the A.C.T. Brumbies – South Coast 7’s.

It’s a full weekend of Rugby 7’s action with junior players, boys and girls, aged 13 to 18 taking part.

Girls from the Tathra-based Far South Coast Falcons will be showing off the speed and skill that makes them two of the most challenging teams in all the competitions they enter.

This year the Falcons have added boys teams to the mix, just for this and the following, Rugby 7s gala days in Canberra.

Falcons players come from Bega, Tathra, Narooma, Pambula, Cooma and beyond.

Action in the South Coast 7’s starts with the girls from 11 am on Saturday (February 23) at Tathra Beach Country Club, through to around 5 pm. The boys kick off at 11 am on Sunday (February 24).

Falcons’ secretary, Kate Howarth says, “It’s one of the few times the Falcons get to play on home turf and we are really hoping the locals come to support our club.”

“Our girls have done the hard yards, thousands of kilometres of travel and hours of training, all for the love of Rugby. I know they’d love to show off their passion to their friends and families.

“Being able to let the boys have a run at home is great too, as there is no local competition for them to strut their Rugby skills,” she says.

“Rugby Union is tough, there is no doubt about it, but it is also one of the most nurturing and family-oriented environments. Players make friends for life in their own teams and from the teams they play. It opens doors all over the world.”

To add pressure to the Falcons girls this weekend, the A.C.T Brumbies staff will be in Tathra on Friday evening running trials to pick just a handful of girls to become part of the very first Far South Coast Rugby Academy.

The Academy has been in the pipeline for some time, with the Brumbies hoping to unearth girls aged 14 to 18 years for transition into the Brumbies Pathway and beyond.

Any girl from any sport, in any part of South East NSW, is welcome to try out, “Some of the world’s best Rugby players have come from a different sport altogether,” Ms Howarth says.
