Designed with Californian vibes, this earthy beachside property offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a music icon’s holiday hideaway.

This stunning property at 775 Congo Road in Congo is a location that has inspired anthems of a generation; now, Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Michael ‘Flea’ Balzary is selling his much-loved Australian beachside retreat on the South Coast.

Situated at the edge of the tiny beachside hamlet of Congo just 15 minutes south of Moruya, the home is set on 2946 sqm of land bordering the Eurobodalla National Park on one side and the beach on the other.

The Australian-born bassist and songwriter purchased the property in 1994 and designed the home together with architect Malcolm Cheadle. Built by local builder Pip Smith, this unique five-bedroom, three-bathroom oceanfront residence features a bespoke spiral copper and steel staircase connecting two double-storey wings.

Designed in the shape of a cuttlefish, with two private but connected wings off the central home, the jarrah timber floors throughout the home were sourced from Old Parliament House.

Ray White Moruya Agent James Hamilton says, “It has a contemporary Californian design that sprawls out towards the ocean with amazing views and really complements the natural environment.

“Flea has written a lot of music at the property, and band members have jammed downstairs in the original music room. He has reluctantly decided to put the home on the market as he is unable to visit as much as he used to. It is wasted sitting here empty.

“It has been a hard decision for him to let it go but he will still retain some interest in the local area,” James says.

“The band surfed the local break when they were in town and became well known to the area’s residents.”

Beautifully maintained, the property has recently undergone extensive updates. Additional features include an open fireplace with stone detailing and a master retreat with an ensuite featuring a mosaic-tiled plunge bath. Bi-fold doors open to an alfresco terrace with views across the property.

A double garage, water views, a multi-purpose sports court, and lots of room for guests make this home a must-inspect.

The selling agent says interest in the music legend’s home has been high.

“We have had a lot of enquiries, including overseas buyers. People who inspect the property walk in and their jaw drops.

“As soon as they see the copper staircase in the magnificent entry and then see how much space is here, they can see how truly unique this property is. And then, of course, there is the musical heritage.”

Congo has become an exclusive destination renowned for its beautiful pristine coastline. Just two hours from Canberra, the property has easy access to the world-class Bingi Dreaming track which crosses along the clifftops to Tuross Head.

The home has a price guide of around $3 million, with its auction set for Saturday, 11 February.
