Thursday 10 October, 3:00 pm: An active police operation is underway at Wilks Park following unconfirmed reports of a shooting incident in North Wagga this afternoon.

Multiple Riverina Police District officers and detectives were at the park collecting evidence and witness statements at around 1:30 pm on Thursday (10 October).

While police are yet to issue a statement on the details of the operation, a witness told Region she saw a man covered in blood after another witness claimed to have heard a gunshot.

“A lady said she heard a gunshot,” the witness said.

“We told her it was probably a bloke cracking the whip.

“But she said: ‘It definitely was a gunshot’.

“The next minute, a bloke came running out covered in blood and went tearing over there,” they said, pointing to the southern section of the camping ground.

The witness also claimed that people had reported on several occasions that an occupant at the park was in possession of a firearm.

“Nobody’s ever done anything about it,” they said.

The witness said a baseball bat was also recovered by police after they observed someone attempting to hide as officers arrived on the scene.

More to come.
