A man is dead and five other people are in a critical condition after a crash at Yarragundry, west of Wagga at around 12:40 pm today (27 December).
When Riverina Police District officers attended the scene, they found one car carrying two people and another car carrying four people had been involved in a head-on collision, with multiple people trapped.
NSW Ambulance Rescue, Volunteer Rescue Association and RFS crews freed the trapped occupants.
A 30-year-old man from South Australia was pronounced dead at the scene. His male passenger was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition.
The driver and passengers of the second vehicle were also treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, with two men and two women being transported to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital in a critical condition.
It was the third fatal accident on the region’s roads in five days.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation has started into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Sturt Highway has been closed in both directions near Churches Plain Road and motorists are being advised to avoid the area while police continue to assess the scene.
