Police are appealing for public assistance to identify a man wanted in relation to an alleged assault in Young last week.

Officers from the Hume Police District were called to a motel on Wednesday 16 July, after a staff member was allegedly attacked while working alone in the office.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 6:20 pm when an unknown man knocked on the locked office door.

The staff member opened the door slightly to speak with the man, who quickly became verbally aggressive, police allege.

Disturbed by his behaviour, she closed the door and retreated to a safer area.

Police allege that shortly afterwards the staff member heard a loud noise and returned to find the bottom glass panel of the office door smashed, with glass scattered inside.

The staff member left the premises to confront the man and took a photo of him.

In response, he allegedly struck her on the head with a pair of headphones, causing minor pain.

Two witnesses observed the alleged assault and police were contacted immediately.

Officers attended the scene and are now seeking to identify and locate a man of Caucasian appearance, about five feet six inches in height with short/buzzed hair, a receding hairline and goatee beard.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a black hoodie, black tracksuit pants and navy-blue ASICS-brand shoes.

Inspector Nick Wiles of the Hume Police District said investigators had released an image of a person they wished to identify.

“This was a distressing experience for the [alleged] victim, and we’re urging anyone who recognises the individual or has information to come forward and assist police,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Young Police Station on 6382 8199 or the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
