Traffic on the Olympic Highway south of Young has been reduced to one lane as emergency services crews work to clear the wreckage of a car involved in a single vehicle accident near Wallendbeen this morning.

Details are still being released but according to NSW Police Media the male driver of the vehicle – a Holden Commodore station wagon – was transported to Young Hospital with critical injuries.

The accident is understood to have occurred six kilometres north of Wallendbeen around 8:35 am and at this stage police say the car hit a tree.

More details will be forthcoming but drivers are being asked to proceed with caution.

The crash single-vehicle accident is the second in the Riverina in less than 24 hours, with a truck driver killed near Tarcutta yesterday.

About 2:30 pm on Friday, January 29, emergency services were called to the Hume Highway, south of Tarcutta, after reports a B-double truck carrying chemicals had veered off the road and crashed.

Police have been told the truck was travelling north on the Hume Highway near the Keajura Creek Bridge when it left the roadway and hit a tree, coming to a stop in the Keajura Creek.

The driver, a man believed to be aged in his 40s, was treated at the scene by passers-by and first responders but died soon after. He is yet to be formally identified.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District established a crime scene and the circumstances surrounding the crash are being investigated.

There were traffic disruptions in both directions while emergency services and NSW Fire and Rescue’s HAZMAT team conducted inquiries.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
