Are you a journalist who likes a challenge? Are you keenly focused on local news, local people and the stories that matter to your community?
Region Media is looking for staff as we grow our regional operation and launch our new platform in Wagga Wagga.
We’re looking for journalists who are self-starters and can rise to a challenge. We want people who will get involved with their community, understand what makes it tick and form strong networks.
Region Media’s purpose is public interest journalism. It’s all local, so we need people who care about their community and have a nose for a good yarn.
Our key commitment is to providing balanced, relevant and professional content, and our reader interaction creates vibrant, entertaining, on-topic conversations, curated to ensure vigorous but fair discussion. Our commercial partners align with our view that community comes first.
Region Media’s Wagga journalists must be able to work independently, but will have the support of an experienced media operation. You’ll be mentored and backed up by our team in Canberra but also have the freedom to set your own course.
Our positions are full-time and fully remunerated at industry rates. We’re looking for experienced journalists but will consider working with emerging writers who are committed to building their careers.
We’re also looking for opinion writers and contributors who have something to say, whether on an occasional basis or as regular columnists. If you’re interested in accessing our large social media audience, we’re keen to talk to you.
Region Media has chosen to expand into Wagga and the surrounding Riverina region for a number of reasons: it’s a thriving and diverse community with a strong economy. Wagga needs and deserves free, high-quality local journalism, and we think the surrounding region’s rich stories also deserve to be told.
We already know that many people who live and work in Canberra have strong ties with regional communities across the South Coast, Tablelands and South West Slopes, and we believe the same is true of the Riverina.
We’re confident that our public-interest journalism model will work as well with our next-door neighbours in Wagga as it already does in Canberra.
And in an era when local media is either disappearing before our eyes or limping on with imported content, that focus on local issues has never been more important.
Region Media is wholly locally owned by a couple of Canberra business builders who are hands-on operators. You’ll be working for a rapidly growing new platform, not a remote corporate entity.
In the past five years, we’ve more than tripled our readership and staff in Canberra. If you’d like to join us for the next stage of our journey, please email [email protected] and express your interest, attaching a CV and some examples of your writing.
