Floodwaters cut the main transport link between Canberra and the coast earlier today as the long-predicted wet-weather event hit the region hard.
The Kings Highway became impassable at about noon today (25 November) between Bungendore and Braidwood. It re-opened before 2 pm, but debris and water were still affecting parts of the highway between Goulburn Road and Tarago Road, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
Diversions were in place along Tarago Rd and the Braidwood/Goulburn Rd, and sections of Tarago Rd have also been impacted.
Police, council and Transport for NSW are attending.
Today’s heavy downpours are expected to continue tomorrow.
Thunderstorms are possible across both days and showers are expected to continue into the weekend.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that heavy rain could lead to flash flooding, with up to 40 mm expected.
The ACT is expected to receive between 25 and 45mm of rain on Friday, 25 November, with the BOM advising heavy falls are likely.
BOM meteorologist Hugh McDowell said the rainfall is the combination of the low-pressure system coming from the Great Australian Bight with the tropical moisture coming from the north.
Earlier this week, BOM officially declared a La Niña in the Pacific Ocean. Typically during La Niña events, rainfall becomes focused in the western tropical Pacific, creating a wetter than normal period.
