Fans of excellent street food and a warm community spirit should head to Spencer Park in Merimbula this Friday (June 28) for a Winter’s evening of conviviality. The first Food Truck Friday pop-up event for the Sapphire Coast is on, boasting a dozen or so of our best food vans, with fire pits and patio heaters, festoon lighting and live music.

It can be difficult for any food business in the low-season on the coast, and our mobile food businesses are affected directly. Without as many outdoor events and festivals happening in the Winter, the doldrums can certainly set in.

Clair Mudaliar of vintage beverage van Peisley’s, came up with this fabulous pop-up food event idea to beat the winter blues. After the first monthly Food Truck Friday in Merimbula, others will follow in Eden and Bega.

“I spent a couple of months thinking about what I could do in the Winter with my van Peisley’s. It’s going to be quiet and I wanted to turn that around. I thought other mobile businesses would be in the same boat,” Clair says.

From that thinking comes The Food Truck Collective which sets out to bring a load of great food vans together in one place.

“The venue was a difficult choice, but Spencer Park is beautiful and has toilets and a playground, and is walking distance from most places in town,” Clair says.

This Friday night will have a unique vibe “there will be loads of different foods in one spot, a real variety, so everyone can come down and support local food van businesses.”

Clair says Peisley’s will be serving up drinks to warm the cockles, including Glühvein – an Austrian/German drink of warm spiced wine traditionally drunk at Christmas time, as well as a dark ale from local brewer Longstocking, and some offerings from local distiller North of Eden Gin.

Other vans taking part in the fun are Faraway Farm Fermentary, with their great gut-healing potions, sensational sweet delights and crazy-good curries; the Kebab Queen, and Phoenician Street Food, will satisfy to your Middle Eastern cravings; and Smifie Catering is dishing up their popular Bao Buns.

Sapphire Coast Eats will be light up their popular mobile wood-fired pizza oven and Merimbula Dutch Pancakes will serve up their poffertjes slathered with whipped cream and succulent fruit. There’s also creamy goodness from Jodestar Ice Cream and more!

So don your woollies, gather some mates, and your appetite and head to the Spencer Park to enjoy the food and vibes of our very first Food Truck Friday.

There’s no entry fee, the event runs 5 pm to 9 pm at Spencer Park, Merimbula. Some of the trucks offer EFTPOS but not all, so it’s best to come prepared with cash just in case. Check the Facebook page for more details.

See you there!
