At the Extraordinary Council Meeting held on Monday, I was honoured to have been elected as Mayor of the wonderful Snowy Monaro region.
I would like to thank Councillor John Rooney who served as the inaugural Mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council. John worked hard for our region and I hope he is able to enjoy spending more time with his family.
Congratulations to Councillor Lynley Miners who was re-elected as Deputy Mayor. Councillors James Ewart and John Castellari also deserve a special mention for contesting the mayoral and deputy mayoral votes.
As Mayor, I look forward to working with each and every one of you. There is a lot of hard work to do right across the region. I hope to serve you to the best of my abilities for the remaining 12 months of Council’s term of office.
Council has a number of items out for public comment. We would love to receive your feedback on the current condition of the region’s recreational facilities. This feedback will help guide the Snowy Monaro Recreation Strategy.
You can have your say through an online survey at Your Say Snowy Monaro or by completing a hard copy survey available at any Council office and library. Feedback closes on Friday 27 September.
As part of the Stronger Communities Fund Major Projects Program, an options study was undertaken to identify the alternative routes heavy vehicles could take to avoid passing through the Bombala CBD.
The Bombala community is invited to attend an information session on Monday 9 September to provide Council with feedback on the management of heavy vehicles through the town centre.
The session will be held in the Bombala Community Centre from 5 to 7 pm. There will be further opportunities for people to have their say at Your Say Snowy Monaro, in person or by writing to Council.
Many of our winter sporting codes are finishing off their seasons. I would like to wish all sides competing in finals the best of luck.
Councillor Peter Beer
Mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council
Editor’s note:
Cr Beer will oversee his first full Council meeting as Mayor on Thursday, September 19 at Bombala Community Centre from 5 pm.
Mayor Peter Beer and Deputy Mayor Lynley Miners see out the term of this council in the top jobs, with the next local government elections in September 2020.
Outgoing Mayor John Rooney signaled his intention not to contest the position prior to the meeting.
“In the two years, I have been mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council, I have been honoured to represent the people of this wonderful region,” Cr Rooney said.
“I feel extremely privileged to have been the inaugural mayor of the Snowy Monaro and I have enjoyed meeting many people in my travels throughout the region.
“Working closely with the state government, this council has been able to achieve better outcomes for the region.
“The region has a bright future and I wish the incoming mayor and deputy mayor all the best as they represent the Snowy Monaro.”
Region Media will be seeking an interview with Cr Beer. Do you have any questions for the new Mayor?
