An elderly Queanbeyan man has been charged after a video surfaced online that appeared to show him dragging a set of keys along the paintwork of a parked Tesla, before pausing to admire his work.
The seemingly random attack occurred in the car park of Woolworths, off Crawford Street in Queanbeyan, on Thursday, 19 September.
The video was captured by a camera on the car’s mirror and reportedly shows the man approaching the car’s passenger side door before taking a key from the set in his hands and dragging it down the side of the vehicle.
He turns to look back at the car for a few moments before walking out of frame.
The car’s owner shared the video to the Canberra Notice Board Group on Facebook to ask if anyone was “familiar” with the man.
“This is not going to be a cheap fix,” the post read.
“I’d love the opportunity to ask him nicely what drove him to do this.”
He said the car was not parked illegally or in a disabled spot at the time.
Officers from the Monaro Police District, hearing the reports, began an investigation.
On Tuesday, 24 September, they attended a home on Wilson Street, Queanbeyan, and issued a 77-year-old man with a field court attendance notice for the charge of destroying and damaging property.
He’s scheduled to appear before the Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday, 11 November.
