Three key projects that aim to transform the functionality, aesthetics and commercial amenity of the Port of Eden will be the subject of an information session on the NSW Far South Coast on Thursday, 6 August.

The Eden community will have the chance to hear about and ask questions on projects centred on the town precinct, from the Eden Killer Whale Museum to the Port of Eden.

The session will be managed in accordance with COVIDSafe hygiene and physical distancing measures at the Eden Fishermen’s Recreation Club from 3.30 pm to 5 pm. It will be limited to 50 people and bookings can be made by registering at Eventbrite. It will also be live streamed on Bega Valley Shire Council’s Facebook page.

Hosted by Bega Valley Shire Council in conjunction with Port Authority of NSW, the session will see a panel present information on the Eden Port Connectivity Upgrade project along Imlay Street and Albert Terrace; the Barclay Street Masterplan; and construction of the Port of Eden Welcome Centre.

Information session panellists include:

  • Sam Watson from Bega Valley Shire Council: Eden Port Connectivity Upgrade.
  • John Turville from Bega Valley Shire Council: Barclay Street Masterplan.
  • Anthony Osborne from marketing agency The Destination Agency: interpretive heritage installation in the Port of Eden Welcome Centre.
  • Natalie Godward from Port Authority of NSW: construction of the Port of Eden Welcome Centre.
  • Jenny Robb from Eden Visitor Information Centre (EVIC): EVIC relocation to the Port of Eden Welcome Centre.

Council’s project manager for the Eden Port Connectivity Upgrade, Sam Watson, said the information session will bring the community up to speed on all three projects.

“The Eden Port Connectivity Upgrade project aims to improve the connectivity of Eden Port to the Princes Highway while addressing and rectifying existing safety issues,” he said.

“Imlay Street and Albert Terrace will receive pavement work to provide a stabilised, longer-lasting surface and improve the functionality and safety of this intersection.

“The pavement on Chandos, Calle Calle and Mitchell streets will be strengthened, providing an alternative vehicle route for semitrailers and buses. The wear and tear on the new street will be significantly reduced, increasing its life.”

Mr Watson said Port Authority of NSW was managing a large redevelopment of the entire port precinct, including construction of the first stage of the Port of Eden Welcome Centre, and that the session is a timely opportunity to update the community on its progress.

Information will also be presented on the proposed interpretive heritage installation for the welcome centre.

“The installation showcases how we will be celebrating local heritage,” said Mr Watson. “Local experts and Indigenous communities and artists have been involved in the preparation of these concepts.”

Whoopee chookee. No sign of a marina or anything for the cannery site. When will it sink in with Eden folk that ever since Ben Boyd Eden has never become the industrial hub of the south?
