The country town of Binalong in the NSW Southern Tablelands has been struck by dance fever with village residents busy warming up ahead of the inaugural Dancing with the Locals.

Ten locals or five dance partners will cha-cha-cha their way into the limelight during a three-minute routine on Friday, 18 June to raise funds for Binalong Community Club.

Organiser and contestant Angela Elliot said she and the other contestants were practising at every opportunity.

“I hand-selected some friends who are groovers or, if they’re not quite as talented, they’re good community icons,” said Angela.

“All of us play league tag together so we train two nights per week and play on Saturdays, and then we’ve been practising in the off days.”

While some contestants are keeping details of their routines secret, it has been revealed that Angela and her husband Graham will perform a 1920s swing dance, sisters-in-law Fabia and Margret Atoz will showcase an Indian belly dance and Mick and Lillian Dal Santo from Binalong Butchery will demonstrate a classic waltz.

Meanwhile, brother and sister Max Giles and Ali Spencer, and friends Jan Giles and Adrian Priem are staying tight-lipped about their dances.

Jan said she and Adrian had run through their routine from top to bottom three times and were ready to dazzle the audience.

The MC for the night is Clancy Greig – local larrikin and second-hand store owner, while the judges include Angela’s father-in-law George Elliot, local teacher Lucy Saunders and local cafe owner Adrian Sykes.

“Adrian is our Todd McKenney,” said Ange, with a laugh, referencing a judge from Dancing with the Stars.

Each dance couple will have one chance to dazzle the judges, however each couple can score extra points for every $100 they raise for the community club.

The dress code is ballroom so ladies will be donning their best dresses while men will be wearing black tie.

Included in each ticket is a grazing table and sparkling wine on arrival, a two-plate main course and a two-plate dessert – plus one hell of a show.

All the money raised will go to the community club and sponsors will be invited into the exclusive VIP area.
