Motorists needing to cross the Batemans Bay Bridge between 8 am and 9 am on Saturday, 14 November, are being warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
The last remaining barge used for marine construction of the new bridge is scheduled to leave the Clyde River, weather permitting, and the existing bridge will have to be opened to allow it to pass through.
The operation needs to happen between 8 am and 9 am to take advantage of favourable tidal conditions.
The barge, named AMS 1807, housed a crane, workers and other materials used to build the new bridge piers. It is being transported to Sydney.
All vessel operators in the area are being warned to exercise extreme caution, to keep a proper lookout and to comply with local buoyage and signage.
“The lift will take up to 20 minutes, and motorists will experience delays along the Princes Highway, the Kings Highway and other local roads,” said a project team spokesperson.
“Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and allow additional travel time. Motorists and pedestrians are also reminded to follow the bridge signals when crossing the bridge.”
If conditions are not suitable for the lift, the community will be notified of a new date and time.
The $274 million Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project has passed its halfway mark and is on track for completion in early 2023.
When finished, the project will give vessels with a 12-metre vertical clearance uninterrupted access under the bridge and put an end to frustrating delays for motorists currently caused by the bridge opening.
The Kings Highway and Princes Highway roundabouts at the Canberra-side entrance to Batemans Bay are now fully open. A set of traffic lights is a new addition to keep traffic flowing during peak times.
