The Adaminaby Rural Fire Brigade has been completing major strategic burns at Denison, Youak and Bolaro ahead of today’s severe fire danger rating for the area.
These areas will potentially be under threat by the out-of-control Adaminaby Complex, Doubtful Gap Trail and Good-Good fires today, all of which are currently at Advice level.
“A number of fires are burning in remote terrain in the Scabby Range Nature Reserve. We are expecting more erratic fire behaviour heading into Friday with higher temps and stronger winds,” an RFS spokesperson said.
The Snowy-Monaro has been hit hard by fire already, with losses including the Selwyn Snow Resort, which burnt over the weekend.
In a fire spread prediction map released by the RFS this morning, the nearby Perisher and Thredbo resorts are also at risk, along with the community of Bredbo.
The crew’s backburning efforts are an attempt to control out-of-control fires in remote areas of alpine bushland.
“Today, with the assistance of a couple of strike teams and crews from other brigades in our region, we spent our time working on Tolbar Road in Kosciuszko National Park, around the Denison and Park Boundary area on the Snowy Mountains Highway and out at Bolaro, as well as responding to a grass fire out on the Yaouk Road,” the spokesperson said.
The organisation reports that two of their members were called on to join a remote area crew to go to Half Moon Peak to put containment around the fire that has been burning and heavily waterbombed for several days.
“Tomorrow could be a challenge for us with the worst fire weather since last Saturday. Please keep your wits about you and pay attention to the weather, watch for fire and burning embers,” the spokesperson said.
“Don’t be complacent yet, we still have days of elevated fire danger and some fires that are still active within containment lines. Thanks to our awesome team who are working tirelessly to keep our community safe, these guys are the real heroes.”
