UPDATED, 3:30 pm: Paramedics have confirmed that eight people were injured in today’s (7 January) van rollover on the Hume Highway, including five children.
The crash, which occurred south of Marulan at around 12 noon, temporarily closed the highway to southbound traffic. The road has now reopened with a single lane.
Speaking at 3 pm, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics had treated eight patients, including four with serious injuries.
These four are a teenage girl and a woman in her 30s who both have injuries to their legs and pelvises, a teenage boy with multiple injuries and a man in his 50s with shoulder and chest injuries.
They have all been taken to hospitals in Canberra or Sydney.
The other four patients, including three primary school-aged children, all had minor injuries. One boy had a laceration to his ear, one girl had shoulder injuries and another boy had minor injuries.
Live Traffic NSW says the southbound lane of the highway near the scene has reopened as a single lane.
Northbound traffic has been reduced to a single lane. Motorists are advised to prepare to merge, exercise caution and expect delays.
This applies to the Hume Highway between Munro Road and Winfarthing Road.

As of 2:30 pm, the highway remains closed for traffic heading south due to the crash.
A NSW Police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the scene between Goulburn and Marulan after reports of a crash, and officers arrived to find a van that had left the road and rolled.
“The driver, a man believed to be in his 50s, and seven passengers were trapped for a short time before being freed by passers-by,” they said.
The driver was treated for minor injuries and has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Three NSW Ambulance helicopters were called to the scene and treated one adult and three children for serious injuries.
“A crime scene has been established and an investigation has commenced into the circumstances of the crash,” the police spokesperson said.
Speaking at 2 pm, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics were still on the scene.
They said seven patients were being treated and paramedics were still finalising their assessment.
The ambulance spokesperson also said a significant number of resources had been deployed for the incident, including the three helicopters.
According to Live Traffic NSW, as of 2 pm, the Hume Highway is closed in a southbound direction between the intersection with Jerra Road in the north and Carrick Road in the south.
Motorists are warned to expect significant delays. Diversions are in place:
- For light vehicles only: Jerrara Rd, Mountain Ash Rd, Windellama Rd to Goulburn, then Bungonia Rd, Braidwood Rd, Sloane St, Finlay St, Hume St, and back to the highway. This detour is not suitable for restricted-access vehicles.
- Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1, 2, and 3 vehicles travelling under a notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable, approved alternate route.
- Operators of Class 1, 2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR.
