Truck driver charged over Barton Highway multi-vehicle crash

A 59-year-old truck driver has been charged over a multi-vehicle smash that closed the Barton Highway for several hours north of Hall yesterday (Wednesday, 13 April).

At about 10:20 am, emergency services were called to the Barton Highway, Wallaroo, after four cars and a truck collided.

Police were told a B-double truck was travelling southbound on the Barton Highway when it struck the rear of a stationary Toyota Klugar waiting at roadworks.

The impact pushed the Klugar into three more vehicles, including an SUV with three children inside.

The driver of the SUV, a 33-year-old woman, was trapped for some time before she was freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.

She was treated by paramedics at the scene for spinal and serious leg injuries before she was driven by ambulance to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Three other drivers and a passenger involved were all taken to Calvary Hospital in stable conditions for further treatment.

The three children were uninjured.

The Victorian truck driver was also not harmed, and was arrested and taken to hospital for mandatory testing before he was taken to Yass Police Station.

Following inquiries, he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive dangerous manner) and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm,

He was granted conditional bail, and is scheduled to appear before Yass Local Court on 17 June, 2022.

Investigations are continuing, and anyone with information about, or has dashcam footage of, the incident is urged to contact Yass Police on 6226 9399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
