The Far South Coast’s Towamba Road will be closed in April as a major project to seal both it and the conjoining Burragate Road progresses.
The Bega Valley Shire Council (BVSC) has also revealed that it became aware there may be artefacts of cultural significance to the local First Nations community near the location of the road works.
BVSC said overall, the project has been progressing well with the mountainous section from Ben Boyd Road to Nullica coming next.
As part of the works, Towamba Road will be closed to all traffic between Nullica Shortcut Road and Ben Boyd Road on weekdays from 7 am to 5 pm between 6 and 16 April.
The road will open overnight and each weekend and the closure will only be during the NSW School Holidays with the road reopening two days before students return.
Council’s project services manager Daniel Djikic said the closure was required to ensure road user and contractor safety.
“In its early stages, the sealing project has worked its way through flatter, rural sections in the Burragate area,” Mr Djikic said.
“Careful planning has so far only required us to close single lanes but as we progress into mountainous terrain we have no alternative other than to close this section to all traffic while works take place.
“We have consulted with local bus lines and emergency services are being informed that access to the area will still be possible during the closure.”
Mr Djikic said some residents had inquired about sections of the road that had seemingly been missed during sealing.

“During works it came to light that in some road sections there may be artefacts of cultural significance to the local Aboriginal community,” he said.
“We immediately contacted Heritage NSW and the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and are currently working through the consultation, assessment and permit process for work to be undertaken in these areas.”
The works are funded with a $10 million grant from Transport for NSW. Additional road closures for other sections of the road are anticipated and will be advised in the future.
