Work is expected to begin shortly on the upgrade of Goulburn Waste Management Centre after Goulburn Mulwaree Council recently awarded the tender for the project.
The winning tender for the Re-Use Goulburn (RUG) project, which will see the centre modernised, came from Lloyd Group at a cost of $8.44 million.
At a recent meeting, councillors agreed on the tender from the Pyrmont-based firm ahead of two other options from Cardno Pty Ltd.
The final cost is above the $7.5 million that council had previously flagged.
Major components to the upgrade include a new drive-through recycling shed, and a ‘tip shop’ to encourage reuse and recycling of items such as furniture in order to keep them out of landfill.
Residents will be able to drive into the undercover waste disposal facilities which will contain a community recycling centre for hazardous materials, and drop-off areas for recyclables such as mattresses, polystyrene and cardboard.
People will also be able to complete weighed disposal of items such as organic, co-mingled recycling and landfill waste.
Mixed loads can be separated at the time of disposal, allowing for recyclables to be charged at a cheaper rate than if they are all sent to landfill.
An onsite education centre and second weighbridge – so vehicles will not have to access the current one from both directions – are also set to be included as part of the upgrade.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Bob Kirk said he is pleased to have awarded the tender for the upgrade “which will greatly improve user experience at the Waste Management Centre”.
He also noted the upgrade will help divert more waste from landfill.
$1.2 million in funding towards the project has been secured through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI) and the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More program.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the LRCI cash injection has given council the funds to tackle some important local infrastructure projects.
“I’m glad the Federal Government could contribute to this project and ensure the Waste Management Centre can be upgraded for the Goulburn community,” he said.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman added that the NSW Government made a $180,000 contribution through the Waste Less, Recycle More program.
“Council’s Waste Management Centre upgrade is an exciting and ambitious project that will improve council’s waste processing capacity, ultimately leading to the reduction of our communities’ waste and increasing our ability to reuse and [providing an] opportunity to recycle,” she said.
Construction is expected to begin in September 2021 and be completed by April 2022.
