Normal postal services are resuming in the NSW Southern Tablelands, as a temporary post office opens in town.

Goulburn’s post office closed in February after routine testing found surface-level lead contamination in backroom areas.

From this week, a temporary post office will be open in a central part of town.

“The post office provides a full range of services, including postage, bill payments and everyday banking,” an Australia Post spokesperson said.

“We thank customers for their patience and apologise for delays in opening the temporary post office.”

Following the closure, Australia Post started work to open a pop-up site, while customers were using the North Goulburn Licensed Post Office and collecting parcels at the Bradfordville Mail Centre.

The spokesperson told Region that remediation works were ongoing.

“Australia Post has been engaging with potential contractors around highly specialised remediation works required for the original Goulburn Post Office,” they said.

“Works of this nature – especially those involving heritage buildings – can take time, and we remain grateful to the Goulburn community for their understanding.”

PO Box mail will be available for collection over the counter at the new location.

Australia Post is also working with several contractors to finalise the cost of the works.

Goulburn is the second town in southern NSW to have a postal services shake-up this month.

Australia Post closed its Narooma outlet for more than a year after lead contamination was found in the rear of the building.

It made the move home to its original site earlier this month.

The temporary Goulburn Post Office is located at 172 Auburn Street, and open between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
