Sunny's Kiosk brings brunch and bar snacks to Merimbula's top lake

Tucked away on the edge of Merimbula’s top lake is a local favourite: Sunny’s Kiosk. As well as servicing boat, kayak and stand up paddle board hire, this establishment punches above its weight, serving up creative and flavourful brunches during the day and a very cool wine menu with bar snacks for summer evenings.

The day we visited was windy and wet, so we opted to drive, but the best way to access Sunny’s is via a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk from the centre of town. Sit on the deck and admire the views across the lake, or enjoy the eclectic decor, antique furniture and jungle of plants inside.

The daytime menu offers a couple of standard brekky classics – house-made muesli with fruit, egg and bacon roll, eggs on toast – while others get a gourmet upgrade. Depending on the season, avocado toast might be topped with Sri Lankan-inspired chilli coconut sambal and fried curry leaf, Vietnamese nam jim dressing, or stracciatella cheese and burnt butter.

The baked eggs are another menu staple, along with the Nashville chicken burger. I chose the charred zucchini salad with butter beans and garlic tahini and added flatbread on the side to mop everything up. This salad is a masterclass in texture: crunchy buckwheat, creamy butter beans, crisp salad greens and soft bread all made each mouthful unique and interesting. Pine nuts, currants, pickles and preserved lemon each added depth of flavour and contrast. It was hearty enough to fill me up, while remaining light and fresh. The perfect plate to perk me up on a sleepy Sunday morning.

The drinks menu is worth a look as well: in addition to your classic flat white, they also make Vietnamese iced coffees and offer a daily juice blend. There was a cabinet full of tempting cakes, but ultimately we were too full (next time I’ll save space!)

As well as being a popular brunch location, Sunny’s opens for drinks and snacks on summer evenings. Prioritising low-intervention and natural wines, the drinks list looks ideal for warm evenings and snacks like Wollemi duck liver parfait with rosella and Narooma tuna tartare with XO and rice crips will definitely tempt me back for an evening on another visit to Merimbula.

With it’s retro-chic aesthetic and top notch food Sunny’s could hold its own among the cafes of Braddon or Brunswick. But it is entirely grounded in place, and at just two years old, is already a staple of Merimbula’s burgeoning food and beverage scene.

Sunny’s Kiosk is open for brunch from 7:30 am to 2 pm, Thursday to Monday.
