Nestled at the end of a long driveway, this idyllic five-acre block presents a rare opportunity to secure river views in a leafy, rural setting just 30 minutes from the centre of Canberra.

Ray White Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra Principal Brad O’Mara says 155 Wickerslack Lane is an extraordinary opportunity that rarely comes along.

“It’s located on the Queanbeyan River, just below the Googong Dam Wall. There aren’t many chances to buy a riverfront property this close to the ACT,” he explains.

“There’s space for the kids to ride a motorbike or to kick a footy in the backyard. And for the ‘green thumbs’ among us, you’ll be surrounded by a mix of deciduous, fruit and native trees.”

The massive 230 sqm six-bedroom home was originally built in the 1970s and is set over three levels.

“All the bedrooms are at the front of the house, and there are two other levels with the bathrooms and the kitchen, as well as the lounge and living areas.

“Each level is connected by a couple of stairs. The levels flow with the fall of the land, down to the river.”

A wrap-around deck offers amazing views of the green surroundings and easy access to the outside world through sliding external doors from most rooms.

“You can hear the river and the dam, so it sounds like a distant waterfall. There are also veggie patches and a number of fruit trees you can harvest from,” Brad says.

The kitchen boasts a 900 mm gas cooktop, an electric oven and a Miele dishwasher, while in the living space, a fireplace and gas-ducted heating will keep everyone warm in winter.

Architecturally designed by Trevor Gibson, Victorian Ash floorboards and timber accents feature prominently throughout the home (even if you’re an avid reader, you’ll have a hard time filling the acres of built-in bookcases).

“There is a real country feel to the home,” Brad says.

“It is a homestead where you are surrounded by nature, but you are close to the amenities and services of Queanbeyan as well as Canberra.”

The home is located in an area that was subdivided in 1963, and it offers a different lifestyle from what you’d experience in nearby Queanbeyan and even what we come to think of as Googong.

“When people think Googong, they think the township – the new suburb development,” he says.

“Wickerslack Lane is in a little pocket of smaller acreage blocks between Queanbeyan and Googong.

“A lot of people don’t want to live in suburbia where you’re on top of each other. This is a home where there is space around you, but it’s not so huge that it’s a burden to maintain.”

The house has a two-car garage, a workshop for hobbies and a rainwater tank.

Water is also pumped to another tank that services the home from the Queanbeyan River.

“The Queanbeyan and Googong area is a great area – everything is so close,” Brad says, noting it’s a short drive to Queanbeyan and 30 minutes to the centre of Canberra.

“Living in a big city, you’re running around from one side of the city to the other. Here, everything you need is five minutes away.”
