Local photographer Chris Chia took the photos at a location near Cooma on Wednesday night. Photos: Chris Chia.

Aurora australis, also known as the southern lights, was visible in all its glory over much of southern Australia last night (12 November).

The Bureau of Meteorology issued an alert for the event on Tuesday afternoon (11 November), with conditions expected to continue throughout Thursday evening before declining on Friday.

The lights are a result of geomagnetic storms, which interact with the Earth’s magnetic field.

Thankfully, local photographer Chris Chia was set up near Cooma to capture it.

“I started shooting just before sunset, and continued until about midnight when it started to fade,” he says.

“At its peak, it was very wide, and the ‘top’ of the show was right overhead.”

A big thank you to Chris for sharing the photos with us.
