UPDATED 23 May: Selwyn Snow Resort is set to open for the 2022 snow season on Saturday 2 July. All snow play tickets and season passes are now on sale through their website.
2 March 2022: Winter is coming and the most highly anticipated event of 2022 in the Snowies is the re-opening of the Selwyn Snow Resort which has literally risen phoenix-like from the ashes of the 2019-2020 bushfires.
The gruelling task of rebuilding the resort began after the discovery that the early January 2020 inferno had not just destroyed machinery, snowmaking and lift infrastructure, but had razed all the buildings.
Within days Andrew Dunkerley, operations manager at Blyton Group which manages the resort, had pledged the resurrection of a “bigger, better” Selwyn and in the two-plus years since, rain nor sleet nor snow has deterred them.
The resort – located in central Kosciuszko National Park between Cooma and Tumut – has remained closed for two seasons.
The initial post-fire clean up began in 2020, making way for the rebuild which commenced in February 2021 after planning approval was granted by the NSW Department of Planning.
The Blyton Group has announced the official re-opening date for Selwyn Snow Resort as Saturday, 11 June, 2022.
Under the banner ‘All New in 2022’, visitors to Selwyn – many of whom frequently travel from nearby NSW Riverina, South West Slopes and ACT – are already pulling out their beanies and plumping up their jackets in anticipation of the revolutionary new resort.
The family-run resort with about 45 hectares of varied skiable terrain has always proven popular with families, beginner skiers, snowboarders and those who like to tube and toboggan down the slopes.
Now they’ll be greeted by a significantly expanded and integrated ‘Selwyn Centre’ that will house all guest facilities and services in the one building plus an expanded ski and snowboard hire, enhanced food and drink offerings and improved toilet amenities.
The 2022 snow season will also see the completed full upgrade of the New Chum chairlift and the re-opening of the resort’s skiable terrain.
The relocation and expansion of the Snowsports Learning Area will also be complete, with the installation of two new dedicated snow carpets for guests to perfect their turns on.
The relocated and expanded Toboggan Park will also open in winter 2022, offering the best tobogganing experience in Australia.
Selwyn’s snowmaking capability will significantly increase with the installation of state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment provided by TechnoAlpin.
Selwyn Snow Resort is the first snow resort in the Southern Hemisphere to purchase the new TT10 snow machines.
Their next-generation technology will enable snowmaking at temperatures more than two degrees warmer than the previous system, critical for the resort which sits lower than most in the alpine regions.
Blyton Group chairman, Kevin James Blyton, said he is looking forward to the reopening of the resort for 2022.
“With the long-term future of Selwyn secured and construction underway, we look forward to the community being able to experience the new and improved Selwyn in winter 2022,” he said.
“We remain fully focused on the rebuild and are excited for the future of the resort,” Mr Blyton said.
Public access to the resort is not currently possible while construction works are being undertaken.
