A new sculpture at Batemans Bay stands in memory of a devoted Eurobodalla community member.
The sculpture, titled Soar, was unveiled in memory of the late Maureen Nathan on 25 June, with 80 people attending the ceremony.
Ms Nathan, who was a former councillor and well known in the community for her work in the business and arts sectors, donated $100,000 for a sculpture to be built at the Hanging Rock Sporting Complex in Batemans Bay.
The sculpture design was finalised shortly before she passed away at age 75 in July 2022.
Following her passing, her son Adam and council’s creative arts coordinator Indi Carmichael took over the project and saw it to completion.
Ms Carmichael said the sculpture celebrated Ms Nathan’s life, and also was intended as an uplifting feature for the public.
“During Maureen’s battle with ovarian cancer, she wanted to leave behind something that celebrated life – a sculpture that was uplifting and made your spirits soar,” Ms Carmichael said.
“Maureen’s wish was for people to look at it and feel a sense of freedom and aspire to just about anything they had their mind to.”
The sculpture was created by artist Terri Watling from the Everlon Group.

It also features a mosaic in shades of blue to represent the Eurobodalla Shire’s blue waters, wind and the sky.
Smaller tiles in the mosaic resemble little blue crabs which are indigenous to the waterfront at the site.
Gold elements also reflect the Old Mogo Gold Rush Colony that Ms Nathan purchased in 1999 and was lost in the Black Summer bushfires.
Ms Nathan’s family and friends, Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Mathew Hatcher and councillors commemorated her life and her contribution to the community at the unveiling.
Ms Nathan was born in Durban in South Africa on 5 May, 1947, and was cared for by her grandparents from age four while her parents worked in the United States.
The family arrived in Australia when Ms Nathan was 13.
Over her life, she would go on to become a pharmacist, councillor, owner of the Original Gold Rush Colony in Mogo and had her own radio show.
Ms Nathan was the mother of Adam, mother-in-law of Alice and devoted grandmother to Emily and Lucy, and partner of Robert.
