Who are you and what is your business? We [Mouat’s Farm] are a small, family-owned cherry and apple orchard in Batlow. Batlow is a renowned apple-growing region in Australia.
Where did you begin? The property has been in the family since 1926. My husband (Greg) is the second generation on the farm and our eldest son is about to come back into the business, making it the third generation. Greg’s father bought the property in partnership with his brother-in-law, who ran the orchard.
What do you produce? We predominantly produce apples and a small quantity of cherries. I make jams and we have assorted local products through our farm shop. Our friend in town uses our fruits and bakes apple and cherry pies and sells those through our shop.
What do you sell that makes a great gift? The box of cherries is a great choice at Christmas time!

What would you make if you could do anything? We crush our apple juice and we’re looking into getting sparkling apple juice done with our product, which is currently in the pipeline. Hopefully, in the next couple of months, we’ll add sparkling apple juice to the line of regular apple juice.
How would you promote the Riverina? Riverina is quite an extensive area that covers a lot of different climates, and the availability of different types of fresh produce is amazing. We’ve got oranges and mandarines out in Leeton and Griffith to cherries, apples, truffles, berries (raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries), beef and lamb in Batlow. Within the Riverina, you’ve got your larger-size farms and lots of little pockets of specialised farms growing all sorts of things.

Coolest local thing you’ve ever bought? From here (Riverina Producers’ Market), Jeremy’s king proteas. They are massive, dinner plate-sized flowers.
Where’s your favourite place for a cuppa? Batlow Bakery is fantastic!
Who is another local producer you admire? Heather (Marm’s Morsels owner), given the range of jams and preserves she does. She grows the majority of her products herself. I make small quantities of jam, and I know how time-consuming that is, and for her to be churning out the amount she does is mind-boggling.
