It was a tight race as the large field of entrants in a popular charity rubber duck race took to South Coast waters over the long weekend.

After a start off Narooma Bridge, the 1000 entrants in this year’s Great Australia Day (Holiday) Narooma Rotary Duck Race on Monday seemed to slow down and drift toward the boardwalk and Mill Bay.

Fortunately, once in the current, they raced towards the finishing line, with only a few disqualifications of those that ventured out of bounds.

Duck 88 shot ahead and was the clear winner. It was purchased by Julie Penglase, of Bermagui, who won $1000.

Last over the line was No. 993, held by Dalmeny’s Peter Pickett, who picked up $100.

Narooma Rotary president Julie Hartley thanked everyone involved in the race.

“Our duck race this year went off without a hitch, thanks to everyone’s efforts,” she said.

Enjoying the fundraising fun are (from left) Rotarian Lynn Hastings, Rotary exchange student Hilma Koskiniemi, Helen Brush, Rachel McInnes, Jo Junor and Ayla Junor.

She thanked those who bought tickets, those who sold tickets, those who helped on the bridge, those who helped retrieve the ducks, including Marine Rescue and Narooma Surf Club members, and those who came to watch.

“We love how much our community has embraced this event, attracting hundreds of people each year,” she said.

“A big thank-you too to all those Rotarians who continue to make this day such a success each year.”

Proceeds from the event will be put towards carers’ accommodation at the new Eurobodalla Regional Hospital and other local projects.
