Tura Beach is known for its resident kangaroos. Big and small, the iconic Australian animal seems at home in suburbia, lounging in sunny front yards.

That ease was upset and replaced with cruelty and carnage on Saturday night with a large number of kangaroos of various ages run over and killed by a vehicle.

Police report that at about 10:15 am yesterday (September 29) they were called to Dress Circle and Headland Drive, Tura Beach, north of Merimbula, after reports of dead kangaroos on the road.

“Police believe that up to 20 kangaroos may have been run over by a vehicle between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Saturday (September 28),” police say.

“Detectives attached to South Coast Police District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident

“Police are appealing for anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to contact Bega Detectives on 6492 9929 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” police say.

A number of surviving joeys are being cared for by experienced wildlife carers however there is a fear others may still be in the area needing care and attention.

Far South Coast WIRES can be contacted on 6495 4150.

Living with wild animals in a suburban environment does take some awareness and patience, and while some residents are concerned at the number kangaroos in Tura Beach, most residents commenting on social media have been appalled by the loss of life and how it was done.

We have been leaving water out for roos since it been so dry. One little wallaby has been coming here for a drink every night on dusk
I just found her body today laying down the embankment near our home in Headland drive, killed by this brainless person. What a barbaric act. What else is this person out there doing.
Maybe we should start a fun raiser to sponsor the sole survivor which has is currently being cared for & the money can go to the WIRES group carers who take on this job of caring for the orphan animals with such love & dedication.
I hope this person is caught, & I hope the court makes them pay in a construction way that prevents this type of action from happening again.
    Thankyou to the WIRES carers
