Nine things to do in the region this week (2-8 July)

While it isn’t exactly the school holidays we all hoped and planned for, there are still things to do around the region, albeit while needing to stay a bit closer to home.

Mogo Wildlife Park is putting on a special camping adventure for the whole family, or you can pay a visit to Kiama Pilot’s Cottage Museum and check out the blowhole while you’re there.

Also on offer is Yass Community Markets, a family fun day out in Merimbula, a weaving workshop in Goulburn, and a NAIDOC Week poetry and storytelling workshop in Batemans Bay.

There is also Truffle Infused Weekends at Mount Majura Vineyard, a Truffle Dog Hunt Demo ‘N’ Lunch at Contentious Character, as well as Bush Traditions Sessions at the Goulburn Club.

Mogo Camping Adventures

When: Saturday, 3 July, Monday, 5 July, and Thursday, 8 July, 3:30 pm arrival

Visitors can now embrace the great outdoors and camp overnight at Mogo Wildlife Park, home to Australia’s most diverse collection of exotic wildlife.

Perfect for families, couples, singles and groups, this new experience is all-inclusive, with tents, beds and meals included, as well as a group animal encounter on arrival.

Guests will also have the opportunity to learn about the rich history of the NSW South Coast and hear live country music around a campfire after dinner.

The following morning will see guests awaken to the distinctive calls of animals and enjoy a breakfast overlooking the park’s Sumatran tigers.

Truffle Infused Weekends

When: Saturday, 3 July, to Sunday, 4 July, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (last entry recommended at 3:30 pm)

Come in to the cellar door at Mount Majura Vineyard to taste a selection of wines matched with truffled brie. Combining deliciously rich triple-cream brie-style cheese with truffles from Jayson at The Truffle Farm.

$10 from each tasting will be donated to Raw Potential Canberra.

Pilot’s Cottage Museum in Kiama

When: Saturday, 3 July, to Sunday, 4 July, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
Where: Blowhole Point Road, Kiama

Built in 1881, this historic cottage details much of the history of the Kiama region. It was used as a home and office for pilots of the area for almost a century.

It is situated near the Kiama blowhole so make sure you pay the iconic South Coast landmark a visit while you’re there.

Bush Traditions Sessions

When: Saturday, 3 July, to Sunday, 4 July, in the evenings
Where: Goulburn Club, 19 Market Street, Goulburn

Enjoy an evening of Australian folk music with songs, dance, tunes, poems and more.

Participation is encouraged so bring voices and instruments and join in. A booklet of local dance tunes has been compiled to use at the sessions, or you can join in and singalong by ear.

Yass Community Markets

Yass Community Markets is held on the first and third Saturday of each month at Yass Memorial Hall. Stalls include a variety of local produce including fruits, vegetables, jams, sauces, oils, baked items, arts and crafts.

Truffle Dog Hunt Demo ‘N’ Lunch

Join the gorgeous truffle dogs for a Truffle Dog Hunt demonstration – a sneak peek into what a real truffle hunt is like – on the lawn at the Contentious Character vineyard. Touch, feel and smell fresh truffles and ask any burning questions you’ve ever had about these delicacies.

Then indulge in a two-course lunch with options for a special dessert, extra fresh shaved truffle and paired wines.

Woven Wonder Rugs

Be kind to the planet and your wallet by transforming your unwanted fabric items into woven masterpieces. Participants will be guided in how to weave a magical and practical rug to use anywhere at home.

Bring along some unwanted T-shirts to be incorporated into your rug.

Wednesday

NAIDOC Week Poetry and Storytelling Workshop

When: Wednesday, 7 July, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Where: Batemans Bay Library, Hanging Rock Place, Batemans Bay
Cost: Free – register online.

Students aged from eight to 14 are invited to Batemans Bay Library during NAIDOC Week to learn about Indigenous ways of healing country and the art of modern day storytelling through poetry.

The event will be led by Dakota Feirer, a commissioned poet supporting the environmental restoration project, Poem Forest.

Having grown up on Yuin country and graduating with an honours degree at the University of Wollongong, Dakota has been carving a path as an independent researcher, educator and advocate for healing country and is passionate about giving back to community.
