A tree-lined avenue, new shade trees and a feature garden are all part of plans to makeover Moruya’s Apex Park.

Right in the heart of the busy CBD, alongside Princes Highway, Apex Park with its bus stop and amenities block is the only park visible to drivers passing directly through town.

Eurobodalla Shire Council says the existing garden around the amenities block will be replanted with low-maintenance natives and will include a feature rock to complement the current plaque recognising the role of granite in the town’s development.

The path running diagonally across the green space will be planted out with fast-growing brush box to create a tree-lined avenue, and the mistletoe-infested pin oak growing next to the amenities block, assessed as a public risk, will be replaced by a shade-giving blueberry ash.

“The focus will be about creating additional picnic opportunities in the park with plenty of summer shade using pest and disease resistant plants and trees with low water needs,” a council spokesperson says.

Most of the park, including the toilets, picnic tables and bus stop, will remain open when work begins this week, with some areas restricted, park users are asked to care when passing through the area.

Good. But this is not additional park space but a revamp of something that already exists.

Given we are in a drought and further water restrictions likely, is this a good use of tax payers money? Personally I would rather use the facilities near the pool with a view of the river rather than on the main street next to a busy roundabout.
