Mountain bike enthusiasts can finally explore the stunning Kosciuszko National Park over the summer holidays with the completion of the last stage of the world-class Thredbo Valley Track.
The final 1.5 kilometres of track runs from Thredbo village to the Thredbo River picnic area, completing almost 40 km of combined trails through scenic sub-alpine landscapes.
The Thredbo Valley Track features beginner-friendly stretches as well as technical and challenging options for more advanced mountain bike riders, and there are amazing views, charming bridges to cross and an abundance of beautiful natural formations to take in.
A NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) spokesperson said in 2019, a 19.4 km stretch of track was opened, offering an exhilarating experience for riders in addition to the existing 16.7 km of track.
The final section is family-friendly and runs from the Gaden Trout Hatchery to the popular picnic area.
The extension also improves access for walkers and fishers by providing an elevated platform alongside the river.
Along the track, riders can experience some of Australia’s highest and most picturesque terrain, taking in stunning alpine and open-grassland views as they follow the Thredbo River through tall mountain gum forest and snow gum woodland.
Riders also cross seven scenic bridges along the way, taking in spectacular views of Thredbo Valley. The finished track offers everything from shorter family-friendly rides to long, technical sections for experienced riders.
For a full-day adventure, riders can begin at Thredbo Village and bike to Bullocks Flat, before continuing to the Gaden Trout Hatchery and finishing with the final new section of track, ending the day with a well-deserved rest and picnic at the Thredbo River picnic area.
The Thredbo Valley Track is open from November to May (subject to weather conditions), making the warmer months the perfect time to escape and explore the Snowy Mountains.
Once the adventure on two wheels is done, visitors can enjoy a range of other activities including hiking to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko, tackling one of the many walking trails in the area, throwing in a line at nearby river fishing spots, or paddling a canoe or kayak down the lower Snowy River.
To experience all Kosciuszko National Park has to offer, visitors can stay overnight at NPWS accommodation including Creel Lodge, a luxury lodge overlooking Lake Jindabyne, Creel Bay cottages, or Ngarigo and Thredbo Diggings campgrounds along the track on scenic spots by the Thredbo River.
Access to the Thredbo Valley Track is free (park entry fees apply). Shuttle services, guided rides and mountain bike hire are also available to visitors.
