Months of disruptions for Kings Highway motorists start today as critical safety work begins on the main transport link between Canberra and the coast.
The Kings Highway between Misty Mountain and River Forest roads will be closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm from today, Tuesday (31 August), to allow crews to remove hundreds of trees damaged by the 2019/20 bushfires.
Traffic control will be in place at Braidwood and Nelligen from 7:40 am each work day to advise motorists the Kings Highway is closing at 8:00 am and that the road will be closed by the time people reach the construction area.
Despite the road closure, road users will still be able to travel without impact from Canberra to Braidwood and Batemans Bay to Nelligen.
It is anticipated the project will be completed in early December, weather permitting.
A Batemans Bay businessman, Andrew Johns, said it was crucial the work was completed before the Christmas school holidays.
With businesses already struggling due to COVID-19 lockdowns, the Christmas trade is seen as critical to helping many survive after the combination blows of bushfires, flood and then pandemic.
The alternative north route will be via the Hume Highway, Picton Road and the Princes Highway and could add up to 6.5 hours of travel time depending on the road user’s origin and destination.
The alternative south route is via the Kings Highway, Monaro Highway, Snowy Mountains Highway and the Princes Highway and could add up to 5.5 hours of travel time depending on the road user’s origin and destination.
Motorists are advised to plan their journey, drive to conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
