Googong’s teenagers are expected to walk into the town’s first public high school come Term 1, 2027, following funding from the NSW Government.
The Department of Education is developing masterplan options for the school’s nine-hectare site at 200 Wellsvale Drive which was transferred to the government in May.
Googong project director Malcolm Leslie described it as a “huge milestone” for the community.
“It represents a major step forward in realising the vision for the community as the town continues to grow towards its projected 18,000-strong population,” he said.
“It will also complement the existing public and private schools within the township, meaning that Googonian families will have greater access to exceptional learning options right on their doorstep.”
The high school will be behind the future town centre and is expected to have modern teaching classrooms along with specialist support classes and specialist classrooms for science, woodwork, metalwork, performing arts and hospitality.
The plans are being funded as part of $1.4 billion announced for new and upgraded schools in regional NSW as part of the government’s 2024-25 budget.
Googong Public Primary School has also received a cash injection for early planning work to increase its capacity to 1000 students.
Principal Rebekah Lindsay said the school community was “thrilled” about the flagged extra classrooms for the site.
“This investment will provide students in our growing community with the facilities they need to succeed,” she said.
“The upgrade will not only support our current students but will also support new families joining our strong and vibrant community.”
