Officers attached to Operation Toric have extradited and charged a 30-year-old NSW man over alleged vehicle offences committed in Canberra.
Police said a first-instance warrant was issued for the man’s arrest in August after he failed to comply with bail conditions in relation to alleged previous driving offences (driving while disqualified).
Taskforce members were patrolling Ainslie on Friday (14 October) when they saw the man in a car.
Officers said when they tried to remove the man from his vehicle to arrest him, he “erratically” reversed his car and drove off.
It’s alleged he narrowly missed hitting police in the process.
Police did not engage in an active pursuit out of concerns for public safety but were able to keep the car in sight.
Officers claimed they saw the man “driving recklessly”, including overtaking other vehicles on the verge, overtaking multiple cars on solid lines and suddenly cutting into traffic.
A subsequent investigation led officers to a home in Jerrabomberra that evening where the man was arrested with the assistance of NSW Police.
ACT Policing officers successfully sought his extradition from Queanbeyan Local Court on Saturday (15 October) and the man was taken to the Alexander Maconochie Centre.
He’s scheduled to front ACT Magistrate’s Court on Monday (17 October) on charges of failing to stop a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.
