Police allege a man crashed his car then stole another from the Good Samaritan who stopped to help him.
The alleged offender, a 29-year-old, was not arrested over the April 2023 incident until recently when he was released from custody in NSW.
ACT Policing said officers went to a home in Ngunnawal after they received reports of an altercation between the occupant and the 29-year-old around 5 am on 28 April 2023.
However, the man allegedly fled the scene in a Toyota Corolla shortly after the officers arrived, then continued to flee police by driving in a dangerous and erratic manner, veering into incoming traffic and almost colliding with another vehicle.
It is alleged he crashed on Majura Parkway, then stole a vehicle belonging to a member of the public who had stopped to give assistance.
The man was arrested and charged in Batemans Bay for offences committed in NSW. After he was released from a custodial sentence, ACT Policing officers applied to have him extradited to Canberra.
He was extradited and faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday (22 February), where bail was refused and he was remanded in custody to 14 March for a plea or mention.
The man faces charges that include taking a motor vehicle without consent, damaging property, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
