Abuse lawyers at Slater and Gordon have launched an investigation into historical child sexual abuse that allegedly took place in Queanbeyan in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Abuse Law Practice Leader Ciara White said they were looking into allegations of abuse that took place against junior football players at the Queanbeyan Tigers and the Queanbeyan Swimming Pool.

She urged anyone with information to contact the firm as it could help with compensation claims being pursued by survivors.

“It’s important that we obtain as much information as possible as part of our investigation, which is why we’re calling on other victims, witnesses and anyone with knowledge of alleged abuse to come forward,” Ms White said.

Region Media has chosen not to name the person the firm was investigating, but he was involved in sporting clubs in both Queanbeyan and the ACT, first as a player and then as a coach and as a club and league official.

He was previously found guilty of abusing a boy who worked at Queanbeyan Pool between October 1984 and November 1985. The man was sentenced to nine months’ jail in September 1995.

He was later found guilty by a jury in October 1996 of abusing another boy in the late 1970s.

He also pleaded guilty to charges relating to two more boys in the late 1970s. He was sentenced to two years’ jail with a 22-month parole period.

It’s believed further allegations of abuse have been made about the man since Slater and Gordon’s compensation investigation began.

Anyone who may have information is advised to contact Slater and Gordon on 1800 570 835. Statements can be provided confidentially.
