Lovers of history, music, art and fishing will have plenty to do at the Bega Valley’s libraries this Seniors’ Festival.
The festival, which runs from 1-12 February, is held to celebrate our seniors and recognise the contribution they make to our community.
For one major event, the Bega Library will host the launch of a new book by the Bega Valley Historical and South Coast History societies, titled Fascinating Bega: The Anatomy of a Town, on 10 February at 11 am.
The book details the surprising and fascinating history of Bega from 1851-2023 and is the first history of the town for the past 80 years.
The always-popular Words and Music program will be held at Eden Library on 9 February from 10:30 am, while an Introduction to Saltwater Fly-tying workshop will be at Bermagui Library on 11 February from 10:30 am.
“The Words and Music event brings people together to share discussion on a specially selected book, which is followed by morning tea and live music,” Bega Valley Shire Council library officer Kerryn Wood said.
“The fly-tying session is perfect for saltwater fishing enthusiasts or first-timers wanting to learn the art of fly-tying. No experience is necessary and all materials are supplied.”
The Eden Library will hold The Art of Imperfection, a workshop exploring ways of letting go of perfectionism through the concept of wabi-sabi, on 8 February at 10:30 am.
“Wabi-sabi is the Japanese concept of searching for the beauty in imperfection and accepting the more natural cycle of life,” Ms Wood said.
“It reminds us that all things, including us and life itself, are impermanent, incomplete and imperfect.”
There are many other activities for seniors to enjoy. Regular programs will continue across the libraries and include Tech Help, Crafternoons, Yarn and Stitch as well as Learn to Knit and Crochet.
Ms Wood said Tech Help at Bega Library offered a free 30-minute session with one of the library’s tech-savvy seniors to help navigate the ever-changing aspects of the digital world. It is at 11 am on 1 and 8 February.
Crafternoons are at the Bega Library at 2 pm on 1 and 8 February, offering a chance to bring your craft projects and have a leisurely chat and a cuppa while discussing your craft or learning new things from others.
Last, Tura Marrang Library hosts Yarn and Stitch each month, and in February is offering a special extension program, Learn to Knit and Crochet, on 18 February from 10 am.
