Goulburn Mulwaree Council is considering bringing forward the planned redevelopment of Goulburn Aquatic and Leisure Centre while it remains closed as part of enforced measures to control the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, councillors considered a report which proposes bringing forward demolition of the indoor pool hall, while the project’s contractor works on design amendments and preparing a modified development application.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council Mayor Bob Kirk said it would be remiss not to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the continued closure of the aquatic centre.

“Our original intention was to keep the indoor pool open throughout the 2020 winter, however the Goulburn Aquatic Centre has now been closed for a month and we expect this to continue for some time due to COVID-19,” said Mayor Kirk.

“If we can bring forward demolition works while the centre is closed, we can obviously minimise impact on the community and make some gains on the entire construction program. Demolition works can proceed under the current development consent for the project.”

The $30 million redevelopment will replace the existing 25-metre pool with an eight-lane pool, and include two new indoor pools, plus the replacement of all amenities, including changing rooms, plus a cafe and new gymnasium.
