The ‘world as we know it’ is no longer, and continues to morph every day.
With many of us self-isolating due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent announcements by Federal and State Governments enforcing social distancing, many of our local eateries have closed their doors indefinitely.
However, some businesses are thinking outside the box. Hoping to maintain staff and trade, and nourish their communities, some of our favourite South Coast cafes and restaurants are offering takeaway meals and drinks which can be ordered and paid for online. Others are going further and will deliver meals right to your door.
Here is a selection of what’s on offer throughout the South Coast.
Note: In this rapidly changing environment, it’s important to check directly with businesses that they are still trading.
Order takeaway:
Feel like a burger around Merimbula? Dulcies Cottage is offering its menu to takeaway, so think milk buns, beef burgers and all delicious accoutrements. Hungry’s is also offering takeaway during business hours, and you can order take-home packs, meals and coffee from Cranky Cafe. Bar Beach Kiosk will be open this week, but is closing ‘for the season’ soon.
Infuse of Tura Beach is offering takeaway – the crew make a mean Vietnamese pho, plus tasty nori rolls and great coffee.
Candelo General Store and Cafe is operating as a takeaway store, with the highly recommended $12 bacon and egg roll on offer as well as a full menu. Further up the hills, Kettle and Seed in Cooma is all go for food ‘to go’.
In Bega, Cafe Evolve is offering takeaway from its menu and still serving coffee, while also attempting to limit the extraordinary waste generated by takeaway service. Red Cafe is also open for take away and appreciates you bringing your own containers (even a little discount).
The lovely people at Eurolicious in Bermagui have set up a blackboard menu, available until 1.30 pm, which you can check out on the cafe and bistro’s Instagram.

Hannah Abraham from Il Passaggio Italian restaurant in Bermagui says she is offering takeaway meals, with home delivery, but understands that “with many people out of work, this might be more of a luxury than a necessity”. She will also be opening her in-store providore on Mondays and Tuesdays from 12 pm-2 pm. Eastwoods also in Bermi are starting take away meals and delivery this week.

Wholefoods and ingredients:
If you want to avoid supermarkets and go for the wholefoods approach with a more organic selection, don’t forget our local wholefood outlets. Some are restricting hours and the amount of certain foods people can purchase, however Gulaga Organics in Bermagui, Pambula Wholefoods and Candelo Bulk Wholefoods Cooperative of Bega are taking phone and email orders for pick up.
Sourdough bread, kombucha and coffee:
Nicky and Chris of Faraway Farm are busy filling their days making loads of ferments to get out to the community “to help everyone build up strong immune systems.” They’re offering online sales of kombucha, krauts, treats and more, with home deliveries to the folks of Bega Valley.
Wheatley Lane Bread of Candelo, and Honorbread in Bermagui, will continue baking and delivering for as long as possible. Honorbread has set up an online shop for pick-up from their store: “We are carefully packaging your bread. No coffee and pastries for now, but [we have] ‘mummas’ [sic] and hot cross buns.”
Wild Rye’s of Pambula has morphed its bakery into a takeaway shop. Its coffee outlet, The Roastery is open for takeaway service. Beans are also available to order online here.
Montague Coffee is still able to post orders via their website. For orders in Narooma to Dalmeny, “we may do delivery of 500g or 1kg coffee to front door; check with us at the time”.
Alfresco Coffee Roasters has kept its ‘hole in the wall’ open and is pumping out goods for wholesalers and online orders.

If we’ve missed your favourite eatery or producer, check in with their socials to see if they’re open and what they are offering. If local eateries are adapting in an effort to stay trading, keep staff and support their communities, we’re all for that!
The list of cafes and eateries closing their doors is growing each day. Check their websites or respective Facebook and Instagram pages for details.
